Traffic Alert: Construction Increases on Bees Ferry Road Widening Project

Drivers asked to be aware of equipment and workers around project area

Charleston County Government alerts drivers that construction will be increasing around the Bees Ferry Road Widening Project in West Ashley.

“People will start seeing more construction activity, equipment and crews working in the area,” said Molli LeMin, an engineer with Charleston County who oversees the project on Bees Ferry Road. “Since our groundbreaking ceremony in December 2011, we have made a lot of progress and are now at the point where work will become more visible to drivers.”

Drivers traveling through the project’s construction zone are asked to be aware of equipment and crews working in the area at all times. The public is also asked to notice traffic control signs, reductions in speed limit and message board information, and to note that all road work is dependent on the weather.

The goal of the project, which is expected to be completed April 2014, is to make improvements to the entire 4.5 mile length of Bees Ferry Road from Savannah Highway (U.S. 17) to Ashley River Road (S.C. 61). The project was requested by the City of Charleston and was funded by the Charleston County Transportation Sales Tax Program. Partial funding for the project was approved by voters in the second Transportation Sales Tax bond referendum.

The public can get more information and see photos of the construction process online at Visit the official website at for public meeting notices and up-to-date news and information about all Charleston County Transportation Sales Tax road projects.
